The lively lanes of shops and stalls that outlived the wholesale market's 2018 move to Toyosu — sushi counters, tamagoyaki, grilled seafood, knives, dried goods and tourists, all packed into a few blocks near Tsukiji Station. Still a genuinely great morning graze if you come early. Note: it's the OUTER market; the famous tuna auctions are now at Toyosu. Closed Sundays and many Wednesdays.

Roughly 5am to 2pm, and it's closed Sundays and many Wednesdays that follow the wholesale market's holiday calendar. Some Wednesdays are open, so check the official calendar before a special trip. It also shuts around New Year (late Dec–early Jan).

Can I buy a knife or kitchenware?

Yes — Tsukiji is a great spot for Japanese knives, and several shops will sharpen, engrave and explain steel types to you. It's one of the best souvenirs you can bring home. Budget accordingly; good knives aren't cheap.

Wait, didn't Tsukiji market close?

The inner wholesale market — including the tuna auctions — moved to Toyosu in 2018. But the outer market, the retail streets of food stalls, sushi bars and shops, stayed put and is still thriving. That's what you're visiting, and it's very much alive.

Is the sushi worth it or overpriced?

It's a bit tourist-priced compared to a neighborhood spot, but the freshness is real and the atmosphere is part of the deal. Skip the longest lines for a shorter one that's still excellent. You're paying partly for the experience, and it's a fair splurge.

Should I visit Tsukiji or Toyosu?

Tsukiji outer for eating and browsing on foot; Toyosu for the actual tuna auction and a more sterile, modern facility. Most casual visitors are happier at Tsukiji. Serious market fans can do both, but they're a train ride apart.

When should I go?

Aim for 9–11am: early enough that stalls are stocked, late enough to skip the pre-dawn rush. Half the best stalls sell out or close by around 11am, so don't roll in at lunchtime expecting full selection. Weekdays are calmer than Saturdays.

What should I eat?

Fresh sushi and sashimi bowls (kaisendon), tamagoyaki on a stick, grilled scallops and uni, tuna in every form, and strawberry daifuku for dessert. Graze across multiple stalls rather than one big sit-down meal. Cash speeds everything up.

Is it cash only?

Many small stalls prefer cash, though more now take cards and IC. Bring enough cash for the little grill and snack stands. There are convenience-store ATMs nearby if you run short.
