Nonbei Yokocho (Drunkard's Alley)

A tiny two-building alley of about 40 counter bars wedged against the JR tracks a three-minute walk from Shibuya Crossing — a genuine Showa timewarp. Smaller, calmer and arguably more charming than Golden Gai, and now protected under a long-term deal with JR. Bars seat 4–8 people, most are cash-only, and expect a seat charge.

How is Nonbei Yokocho different from Golden Gai?

It's smaller — about 40 bars versus 200 — quieter, and right by Shibuya rather than Shinjuku. Many locals find it more relaxed and less of a tourist scene. If you want intimate over sprawling, come here.

Will I fit in as a foreigner?

Some bars are warm to visitors and some are regulars' clubhouses with almost no room. Peek in, and if the owner waves you over, great; if it's full or feels closed-off, try the next door. A smile and a little Japanese help enormously.

Can I bar-hop here?

Absolutely, and it's the fun of it — with only a handful of seats per bar, moving to a second or third spot is normal. Just settle your tab fully before you leave each one.

Is there food?

Yes, more than Golden Gai — several spots do yakitori, oden and small izakaya plates alongside drinks. You can cobble together a light dinner across a couple of bars, but don't expect big meals.

What time does it get going?

Bars start opening around 6pm and it hums from 8pm onward. Because seats are so few, weekends and early evening can fill up fast — a weeknight gives you the best shot at a stool.

Is it cash only?

Overwhelmingly yes. Nonbei keeps its old-school character and most bars don't take cards or IC payment. Bring cash from a Shibuya konbini ATM before you go.

How much should I budget?

Around ¥3,000–5,000 per person, which covers the otoshi seat charge, a couple of drinks and a small dish or two. Bars are small so nursing one drink for an hour isn't really the etiquette — expect to order steadily.
