The building itself is an architectural marvel worth seeing from the outside even if you skip the interior. Allow at least two hours to absorb the interactive installations. Weekends get very crowded, so arrive right at opening on a weekday if possible.

Oscar Niemeyer's 700-meter parade avenue is where Rio's samba schools compete each Carnival — the greatest show on earth if you're here in season (Feb 5-10, 2027; grandstands from about R$250). Honest truth: outside Carnival it's a mostly empty concrete corridor, worth a quick look only if you're already nearby.

Check hours carefully as they vary and the museum occasionally closes galleries for restoration.

Ilha Grande is a car-free jungle island with some of Brazil's best beaches, about 3 hours from Rio plus a 25-minute speedboat from Conceição de Jacareí. It's gorgeous — but as a day trip it's rushed: you'll spend 6+ hours in transit for a few hours of paradise. If you possibly can, stay at least one night in Vila do Abraão.

An active military fort built in 1914 at the southern tip of Copacabana, now housing a military history museum with original cannons, period uniforms, and exhibits on Brazil's WWI and WWII involvement.
