The Arcos da Lapa is a monumental white 18th-century aqueduct, 42 arches striding across the Lapa district, and one of Rio's most recognizable colonial landmarks. Once carrying water into the city, it now supports the restored Santa Teresa tram (bonde) that rattles across the top up to the hilltop neighborhood. It is free to see and photograph and anchors Rio's liveliest nightlife zone, but the area gets rowdy and less safe late at night, so visit the arches by day and stay alert after dark.
