Shitenno-ji is one of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples, founded in 593 AD by Prince Shotoku. The grounds are free to wander, while a small fee lets you into the central precinct to climb the five-story pagoda and see the main hall. The buildings are faithful reconstructions rather than originals, but the layout preserves the ancient temple plan.
