Housed in the 18th-century palace of the Counts of Santiago de Calimaya — built on Aztec ruins with a serpent head embedded in its corner — this museum tells the story of Mexico City itself through maps, photographs, paintings, and urban artifacts. The building is one of the finest colonial palaces in the Centro, and the rooftop terrace offers excellent views of the surrounding historic streets. Entry is free, making it one of the best deals in the city. The permanent collection is modest but the temporary exhibitions on urban history and culture are often excellent.
