The National Palace lines the entire east side of the Zócalo and holds Diego Rivera's epic staircase murals tracing Mexican history from Aztec times through the revolution. Entry is free with a photo ID, and the murals alone justify the trip. Because it is a working seat of government, access can be restricted or closed at short notice, so check before you go and expect airport-style security.
