The 17th-century Jesuit fortress on the hill beside the Ruins of St. Paul's — cannons still aimed at the Grand Lisboa, wide lawns, and the best free viewpoint in the old town. It famously repelled the Dutch in 1622. Grounds are free daily 7am-7pm; the Macau Museum is built into it. Go — it's effortless to add to the Ruins.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Mount Fortress and the Ruins of St. Paul's together?
Absolutely — they're adjacent and were both part of the same Jesuit complex. The standard move: Ruins first, then up to the fort, then the Macau Museum, all within a few hundred metres.
Is Mount Fortress hard to climb?
Not really. The escalators beside the Ruins and inside the museum entrance handle most of the elevation; otherwise it's a gentle paved climb. The top is flat, shaded in parts, and has benches.
Is Mount Fortress free and when is it open?
Yes — the fortress grounds are free and open daily 7am to 7pm. The Macau Museum inside the fort charges a small fee and keeps its own hours (10am-6pm, closed Mondays).
What's the history of Mount Fortress?
The Jesuits built it between 1617 and 1626 to defend Macau, and in 1622 a lucky cannon shot from here hit the Dutch invasion fleet's powder supply and saved the city. It later became the governor's residence and a weather observatory before becoming a public park.
Is the view from Mount Fortress good?
One of the best in the old town — 360 degrees over the peninsula with the surreal juxtaposition of colonial cannons pointing straight at the Grand Lisboa casino. Guia Hill is higher, but Monte is more central and easier.
How do I get up to Mount Fortress?
From the Ruins of St. Paul's it's a couple of minutes — there's an escalator entrance beside the Ruins that takes you most of the way up, which most people miss. From Senado Square the whole walk is about 10-15 minutes.
Is Mount Fortress crowded?
Far less than the Ruins below — tour groups photograph the facade and skip the climb. Early morning it belongs to locals doing tai chi and walking dogs, which is the nicest version of it.
How long does Mount Fortress take?
45 minutes for the ramparts, cannons and gardens. If you add the Macau Museum — which you should, it's the city's best history museum and only MOP 15 — budget 2-2.5 hours total.
