A remarkably intact 15th-century Ottoman fortress built by Mehmed II in just four months to control the Bosphorus strait before the conquest of Constantinople, with three massive towers and walls you can walk along. The views of the Bosphorus from the ramparts — with the bridge in one direction and the strait narrowing in the other — are among the best in the city. The site is genuinely uncrowded compared to Sultanahmet attractions and the surrounding neighborhood is a pleasure to explore on foot.
