The 12 Best Attractions in Istanbul

The single best-value thing you can do in Istanbul: the public Şehir Hatları ferry up the Bosphorus from Eminönü, past palaces, waterfront mansions, and two continents, for a few dollars. Skip the pushy 'private cruise' touts near the bridge. The only catch is the full tour eats most of a day.

The great architect Sinan's masterpiece crowning one of Istanbul's hills, free to enter, and blessedly less mobbed than the Blue Mosque. Serene interior, a courtyard, and a terrace with a killer Golden Horn view. This is the one I'd steer a friend toward. Only real catch: it's an uphill walk from the tram and closes for prayer.

Istanbul's cascade-of-domes icon, still an active mosque and free to enter. The long restoration is essentially done, so the Iznik-tiled interior and courtyard are back on full display. A friend absolutely sends you here, but manage expectations: crowds are heavy, non-worshippers use a side entrance, and it closes for prayer.

The site is genuinely uncrowded compared to Sultanahmet attractions and the surrounding neighborhood is a pleasure to explore on foot.

Maiden's Tower is a small tower on an islet just off the Üsküdar shore, with roots reaching back to Byzantine times and a swirl of legends attached to it. A short boat ride takes you out for panoramic Bosphorus views, a café and a compact museum inside the restored tower. Boats are weather-dependent and the interior is small, so it's more about the setting and the ride than the building itself.

The biggest of the car-free Princes' Islands, a ferry ride into a slower, pine-scented world of Belle Époque wooden mansions, bicycles, and swimming coves. A lovely escape a friend happily sends you on. Caveat: summer weekends are mobbed, the ferry is long, and the famous horse carriages are gone (electric shuttles now).

1,500 years of history in one building: Byzantine cathedral, Ottoman mosque, museum, and now a working mosque again. Unmissable. But be clear on the 2024-onward setup: the ground floor is free as a mosque, while tourists pay 25 euros for the upper gallery with the best mosaics, and it closes for prayer. Expect crowds and queues.

Taksim Square is the symbolic heart of modern Istanbul, anchored by the Republic Monument and the large Taksim Mosque and serving as the city's main transport and gathering hub. It's the traditional starting point for a walk down İstiklal Avenue. The square itself is mostly open concrete and is more of a landmark to pass through than a place to linger.

A hilltop café above the Eyüp cemetery with a sweeping view down the Golden Horn, named for the French writer who loved the spot. A gentle, cheap, atmospheric outing, especially reached by the little cable car. Caveat: it's touristy and the tea is average; you're paying for the view and the ride, not the coffee.

The last village before the Bosphorus meets the Black Sea, and the turnaround point of the long public ferry. Come for the ruined Yoros Castle up the hill and a fish lunch by the harbor. Honest caveat: it's a long haul and the waterfront restaurants are touristy and overpriced, so pick carefully.
