Connaught Place is the colonnaded Georgian-style commercial heart of New Delhi, its white concentric arcades ringing a central park and buzzing with shops, restaurants, and street vendors. It is a natural hub for shopping, people-watching, and catching the metro. It is chaotic and touristy with persistent touts, so keep your wits about you and settle prices before buying.

Delhi's Little Tibet: a dense refugee colony by the Yamuna packed with monasteries, momo joints, thukpa, thrift and travel agents. Cheap, warm and genuinely different from the rest of the city. The metro's a walk or rickshaw away, but it's worth the detour.

Delhi's most expensive retail per square foot: a small, leafy market of bookshops, boutiques, delis and cafes beloved by diplomats, journalists and the well-heeled. Polished, easy and pricey. Closed Sundays; the Violet Line drops you at the door.

An urban village turned designer district: crumbling havelis and cow-dotted lanes hiding bridal couturiers, indie labels, cafes and street art. Quieter and more creative than Hauz Khas, ideal for wedding-outfit hunting. Small shops, so come with time; most close Sunday.
