Tucked just west of the Forbidden City, this former imperial altar park is one of Beijing's most underrated — elegant, well-maintained, and rarely as crowded as its location would suggest. The five-colored soil altar (Shejitan) at its center is a genuine Ming-dynasty relic, and the park's rose garden peaks spectacularly in May. It's an ideal spot to decompress after the intensity of the Forbidden City, with good teahouses and a pleasant concert hall hosting classical performances. Entry is cheap and the park closes relatively early, so plan accordingly.
