Directions

A true urban wilderness — an 88-acre wooded island in the Potomac River accessible only by a footbridge from the Virginia side, managed by NPS. Miles of trails wind through marsh, swamp, and upland forest, with a dramatic memorial plaza at the center. It feels genuinely wild and is excellent for birdwatching. Parking on the Virginia side fills quickly on weekends, and there are no facilities beyond restrooms.
