Designed by the eccentric Friedensreich Hundertwasser and housed in a former Thonet furniture factory, Kunsthaus Wien is both a museum dedicated to Hundertwasser's colorful, organic art and a work of art in itself — uneven floors, mosaic tiles, and living trees are part of the architecture. The permanent collection covers his paintings, graphics, and environmental philosophy, while temporary shows bring in international contemporary artists. The building alone justifies the visit, though the neighborhood is a short tram ride from the center.
