Leopoldstadt is Vienna's 2nd district, and its Karmeliterviertel corner is one of the city's most exciting food-and-cafe scenes: young chefs, specialty coffee, a historic market and multicultural roots, all a short walk over the Danube Canal from the center. Add the Prater park and canal beach bars, and it is a genuinely local, un-touristy day out.

Mariahilf is Vienna's 6th district, home to the big Mariahilfer Strasse shopping street on one side and, more interestingly, the bohemian Gumpendorfer Strasse on the other. Think independent boutiques, cocktail and wine bars, queer-friendly haunts and cafes locals actually use, plus the Naschmarkt on its southern edge. Dense, lively and genuinely local.

Ottakring is Vienna's 16th district, and its Brunnenviertel is the city's most multicultural corner: the Brunnenmarkt, one of Europe's longest street markets, opens onto the cafe-filled Yppenplatz. Turkish, Balkan, Syrian and African vendors sit alongside a growing creative crowd. Gritty, colorful, affordable and completely un-touristy, it is where real, changing Vienna eats and shops.

The Freihausviertel is a small creative pocket of the 4th district wedged against the Naschmarkt, full of galleries, second-hand shops, wine bars and old Viennese cafes along Schleifmuehlgasse. It is genuinely local despite bordering the tourist market. Come for an afternoon of wandering, coffee and gallery-hopping, not blockbuster sights.

Neubau is Vienna's 7th district, blending the huge MuseumsQuartier with the tiny cobbled lanes of Spittelberg. It is the city's creative heart: design shops, indie cafes, galleries and a car-free Biedermeier village atmosphere, all a short walk from the Ring. Popular but still genuinely local, and one of the most enjoyable districts to just wander.

The Innere Stadt is Vienna's 1st district, the historic core inside the Ring: St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg, grand cafes and the elegant Graben and Kaerntner Strasse. It is iconic and almost entirely walkable, but also the most touristy and expensive part of town. Essential to see, best experienced early morning or after the shops close.

Josefstadt is Vienna's smallest district, a quiet, elegant 8th-district pocket of Biedermeier townhouses, small theaters, cafes and independent shops just behind the Rathaus. There are few big sights, which is the point: it is a calm, genuinely local neighborhood to wander and eat in, minutes from the center but without the crowds.

Grinzing is Vienna's most famous Heuriger (wine tavern) village, up in the 19th district at the edge of the Vienna Woods. It is pretty and historic, but also the most touristy Heuriger area, heavy with coach tours. Go for the setting and young wine, but know that quieter, more local taverns lie just nearby.
