The Top 5 Neighborhoods in Vancouver

East Van's most soulful street — 'The Drive' — where old-school Italian cafes, Latin American joints, indie bookshops, vegan spots and dive bars share 20-odd blocks. This is where I send friends who want the real, unpolished Vancouver, not the postcard. Come hungry, come to walk, and don't expect anything fancy — that's the point.

Main Street (especially 'SoMa' south of Broadway) is Vancouver's hippest stretch — vintage and design shops, record stores, indie coffee, craft breweries, and some of the city's best casual eats. This is where I send friends who want cool without pretension. Heads up: it's bus-only, and Broadway subway construction near the north end can be messy.

Mount Pleasant is East Van's craft-beer and creative heart — the historic Brewery Creek area packs a dozen-plus breweries into a walkable strip, alongside vintage shops, murals, and great casual food. This is my top pick for a brewery crawl. One caveat: the Broadway subway station here won't open until around 2027, and construction still lingers.

Downtown's leafy, walkable southwest corner — the only neighbourhood that opens straight onto both English Bay Beach and Stanley Park. Davie Village is the heart of Vancouver's LGBTQ+ life, Denman has cheap-and-great eats, and the seawall is at your feet. This is my top pick for where to stay downtown. Dense and lively, not quiet.

A historic fishing village in Richmond where you buy fresh-off-the-boat seafood at Fisherman's Wharf, eat legendary fish and chips at Pajo's, and tour the Gulf of Georgia Cannery (free until Sept 7, 2026). Charming and genuinely worth the trip. Caveat: it's a hike from downtown — Canada Line plus a bus — so plan a half-day.

One of the largest and oldest Chinatowns in North America, marked by the ornate Millennium Gate and blocks of heritage buildings, apothecaries and dim sum houses. It is a neighbourhood in transition, mixing longstanding family shops with new cafes and galleries, and some blocks feel rough around the edges. Pair a wander with the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden at its core.

'Kits' is Vancouver's beach neighbourhood — English Bay sand, sunset volleyball, Canada's longest heated saltwater pool, and a boutique-and-brunch strip on West 4th. This is where I send friends who want beach-town-meets-city. One catch: there's no SkyTrain, so you're relying on buses or a car to get here and around.

A polished former-warehouse district turned upscale — converted red-brick lofts on Mainland and Hamilton now house top restaurants, patios, boutiques, and a Canada Line station right in the middle. Great for a stylish dinner and a False Creek seawall stroll. Honest caveat: it's the pricey, see-and-be-seen corner of the city, short on gritty character.

Vancouver's oldest quarter — cobblestones, Victorian brick, the famous steam clock, and a strip of restaurants, cocktail bars and design shops. Genuinely handsome and worth an evening, but be honest with yourself: the steam clock is a 1977 tourist magnet, it's pricey, and it butts right up against the Downtown Eastside, so a block west gets rough.
