A very good zoo with an unbeatable gimmick: giraffes photographed against the Opera House skyline. The ferry ride there is half the fun. It's genuinely strong on Australian native wildlife and conservation. Caveat: it's steep, pricey at the gate (from $51 adult online), and school-holiday weekends are heaving — book online, go early.

When are animals most active?

First thing in the morning, and at scheduled keeper talks and feedings through the day — grab the daily schedule at entry and plan around two or three talks. Hot summer afternoons are nap time for almost everything.

Is the zoo hilly? I have limited mobility.

It's built down a serious hillside, so plan a top-to-bottom route: cable car or bus to the top entrance, then descend to the wharf. There are accessible paths and maps marking gradients — allow extra time rather than doubling back uphill.

Can you stay overnight at the zoo?

Yes — the Wildlife Retreat at Taronga is a proper eco-lodge inside a native animal sanctuary, and Roar and Snore offers glamping-style overnight safaris. Both are splurges and book out well ahead.

Will I see koalas and kangaroos?

Yes — Taronga's Australian native section includes koalas, kangaroos, wombats, platypus and echidnas, and it's one of the zoo's genuine strengths. Paid close-up koala encounters exist if you want the photo, but viewing is included in entry.

What are Taronga Zoo's opening hours?

9:30am to 4:30pm in winter (May-August) and 9:30am to 5pm the rest of the year, open every day. Last entry is 4:30pm year-round, so mornings give you the most zoo for your money.

Is Taronga Zoo worth it compared with a wildlife park outside the city?

For variety, setting and ease without a car, yes. If your only goal is hand-feeding kangaroos cheaply, a wildlife park day trip does that better — but none of them have giraffes with a harbour backdrop.

How much are Taronga Zoo tickets?

Online tickets start around $51 adult, $31 child (4-15), and $155 for a family of four — gate prices are higher and peak days can sell out. The Zoo Express bundle (return ferry plus entry plus the Sky Safari or shuttle) from about $67 adult is usually the best value if you're coming from Circular Quay.

How do I get to Taronga Zoo?

The ferry from Circular Quay takes about 12 minutes and is a harbour cruise in its own right. From the wharf, ride the Sky Safari cable car up to the main entrance and work your way downhill through the zoo back to the ferry — much kinder on legs.
