The 8 Best Beaches in Sydney

A small, north-facing protected cove just a short walk around the headland from Manly, Shelly is one of Sydney's best snorkelling spots with remarkably clear water and abundant marine life including wobbegong sharks and blue gropers. The calm, non-surf conditions make it ideal for families and divers. It gets very busy on summer weekends so arrive early.

A beloved southern beaches gem with a more relaxed, community feel than Bondi despite being just a few kilometres south. The protected bay makes for calmer swimming conditions, and the coastal walk north toward Bondi is one of Sydney's finest. Weekends still draw crowds, and parking is genuinely painful — bus or walk from Randwick.

The other great Sydney beach — and many locals' pick over Bondi. The 20-30 minute ferry from Circular Quay is one of the world's best commutes, and Manly rewards you with a long surf beach, calm harbour coves, and a relaxed village. Caveat: summer Sundays get packed too; the daily Opal cap makes weekends cheap to reach.

Historically significant as the beach where Duke Kahanamoku introduced surfing to Australia in 1915, Freshwater is a genuine local favourite on the northern beaches with a strong surf culture and a beautiful headland setting. The surf club is one of the oldest in Australia and the beach itself is less crowded than Manly. Rips can be strong so swim between the flags.

The only beach in Sydney directly accessible by train, Cronulla is a long, wide stretch of sand in the Sutherland Shire with a proud surf culture and a laid-back coastal town feel. Multiple beach sections cater to swimmers, surfers, and families, and the nearby Cronulla strip has solid cafes and fish and chips. It's a long trip from the CBD but the train ride is easy and the beach rewards the journey.

The jewel at the tip of the northern beaches peninsula, Palm Beach is a stunning double-sided beach with ocean surf on one side and the calm Pittwater lagoon on the other — genuinely one of the most beautiful beach settings in Australia. The lighthouse walk and views from Barrenjoey Headland are unmissable. It's a 90-minute drive or bus from the CBD, so plan for a full day.

A sheltered harbour beach on Middle Harbour with calm, shark-netted water, a rotunda, and a genteel atmosphere that feels distinctly different from the ocean beaches. It's a favourite for families with young children and those who prefer flat water swimming. The strip of cafes and the Bathers' Pavilion restaurant add a touch of elegance. Getting here without a car requires some effort via bus from Mosman.

Australia's most famous beach: a kilometre of reliably good sand and surf, the Icebergs ocean pool, and a promenade of people-watching. It's genuinely great, not just hyped — but summer weekends are wall-to-wall and there's no train, so buses or an expensive parking hunt. Swim between the red-and-yellow flags, always.
