The 8 Best Neighborhoods in Singapore

Ranked by our editorial Friend Score and filterable to exactly what you want — every pick verified and sourced, the way a local friend would tell it.

Singapore's Peranakan heartland in the east, famous for the pastel, ornately tiled 1920s shophouses on Koon Seng Road and rich Nyonya food. This is where to slurp Katong laksa (328 Katong Laksa is the icon). The 2024 Thomson-East Coast Line extension finally put an MRT (Marine Parade) within reach.

  2. 2
    $$

Singapore's first public housing estate, now its most charming heritage-hipster neighbourhood. Streamline Moderne 1930s walk-ups with porthole windows sit beside indie bookshops, specialty coffee, and Tiong Bahru Bakery's famous croissants. The 1955 market's hawker level serves standout chwee kueh. Reach it via Tiong Bahru MRT (EW17), a 10-minute walk from the action.

  3. 3
    $$

Singapore's historic Malay-Muslim quarter, anchored by the golden-domed Sultan Mosque and reached via Bugis MRT (EW12/DT14). Wander textile-lined Arab Street, palm-fringed Bussorah Street, and mural-covered, boutique-packed Haji Lane. It blends genuine heritage with a hip cafe-and-shopping scene, and rewards an unhurried half-day of walking and eating.

Little India is Singapore's most vivid and sensory ethnic quarter, a stretch of colourful shophouses, garland stalls, Hindu temples and the bustling Tekka Centre wet market and food hall. It's the best place in the city for a banana-leaf curry and to feel a genuinely lived-in neighborhood. It gets especially crowded on Sundays when the local migrant community gathers, which is atmospheric but tight; go on a weekday for a calmer wander.

Chinatown is Singapore's historic Chinese quarter, a walkable grid of restored shophouses, temples and markets. Highlights include the ornate Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, the Hindu Sri Mariamman Temple and the hawker feast of Chinatown Complex and Maxwell food centres. The main souvenir streets are touristy, but the temples, side lanes and food centres keep it genuinely worthwhile; explore beyond Pagoda Street for the local side.

A relaxed expat-and-student enclave around Holland Village MRT (CC21) on the Circle Line. Low-rise rows of restaurants, bars, cafes and quirky shops, with Wala Wala for live music and 2am:dessertbar for a nightcap. Not a heritage sight, but a genuine, easygoing local hangout for eating and drinking.

    $$$$

A leafy former British army barracks turned upscale dining-and-lifestyle enclave off Holland Road. Think brunch, wine bars, antique galleries, COMO Dempsey and PS.Cafe under old rain trees. Beautiful and relaxed, but pricey and car-dependent, with no MRT within easy walking distance. Great for a slow, wallet-loosening afternoon.

Singapore's 2.2km flagship shopping boulevard, served by three MRT stops (Dhoby Ghaut, Somerset, Orchard). ION Orchard sits right atop Orchard MRT, alongside Ngee Ann City/Takashimaya, Paragon and 313@Somerset. It's polished, air-conditioned and efficient rather than characterful, best for serious shopping, malls and people-watching, not local soul.
