Is there anything to do outside the main building?

Yes, the surrounding grounds include a reflecting pond, walking paths and the Pagoda Garden with stone pagodas and Buddhist relics, open 7am to 10pm with no ticket. It's a pleasant place to decompress before or after the galleries, especially in nice weather.

When is the museum closed?

It closes on a handful of holidays each year: January 1, Lunar New Year (Seollal) and Chuseok. Occasional maintenance closures fall on the first Monday of certain months, though 2026 has no March closure. Otherwise it's open every day, including most Mondays, unlike Leeum.

Is it good for families?

Very. There's a dedicated free Children's Museum with hands-on exhibits, plus wide-open spaces and the outdoor Pagoda Garden. It's a great rainy-day or hot-day option for families, and the free admission means there's no pressure to rush through to get your money's worth.

How much time do I need?

The collection is huge, so two to three hours covers the highlights and a full half-day lets you go deep. Don't try to see everything, pick a few galleries. Grab a map at the entrance and prioritize the sculpture, celadon and Silla gold halls if time is short.

How do I get there?

Take Line 4 or the Gyeongui-Jungang line to Ichon Station and use Exit 2, following the signed underground path to the museum. It's in Yongsan, set in a large park, so allow a few minutes' walk from the station to the entrance.

What are the opening hours?

It's open 10am to 6pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, and stays open late until 9pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Those late evenings are the calmest, most pleasant time to wander the galleries.

Is the National Museum of Korea free?

Yes, the permanent exhibition halls and the Children's Museum are free, as are many special exhibitions. Only a few blockbuster special shows charge admission. For a museum of this scale and quality, free entry makes it one of the best-value experiences in all of Seoul.

What are the must-see pieces?

The Pensive Bodhisattva, a serene gilt-bronze masterpiece in its own dimly lit room, is the signature work. Also seek out the ten-story Gyeongcheonsa Pagoda rising through the central hall, the Goryeo celadon, and the gold crowns from Silla tombs. Even a highlights loop is rewarding.
