Gangnam

Gangnam is Seoul's glossy, moneyed south-of-the-river district: luxury shopping, plastic-surgery clinics, COEX Mall, and corporate towers. It is impressive and spotless but not cozy. Come for scale, K-pop landmarks, and Bongeunsa Temple, not for old-Seoul soul. Half a day is plenty.

Frequently asked questions

What is there to do in Gangnam?
Visit COEX Mall and its 13-meter Starfield Library, shop tree-lined Garosu-gil, see the 1,200-year-old Bongeunsa Temple across from COEX, and spot K-pop group statues along K-Star Road. In the evening, the nearby Banpo Bridge rainbow fountain runs in warm months.
How does Gangnam compare to Hongdae?
Gangnam is upscale, corporate, and orderly; Hongdae is young, gritty, and cheap. If you want luxury shopping, clinics, and big malls, choose Gangnam. If you want street music, indie fashion, and nightlife on a budget, Hongdae wins. They are about 30 minutes apart on Line 2.
Where is Garosu-gil and is it worth it?
Garosu-gil is a tree-lined shopping avenue in Sinsa-dong, north of Gangnam Station near Sinsa Station. It has global chains, an Apple store, and dessert cafes. Honestly the main road has gotten generic; the real charm is in the smaller side streets, called Serosu-gil.
How do I get to Gangnam by subway?
Gangnam Station on Line 2 (the green circle line) is the main gateway and Korea's busiest station. From Hongdae it is about 30 minutes. For COEX use Samseong Station (Line 2); for Garosu-gil use Sinsa Station (Line 3 or Sinbundang Line).
Is Gangnam worth visiting for tourists?
It depends what you want. Gangnam is polished, modern, and safe, with COEX Mall, Starfield Library, Bongeunsa Temple, and K-Star Road. But it is spread out and lacks the intimate street life of Hongdae or Ikseon-dong. Treat it as a half-day, not a base.
Is Gangnam good for K-pop fans?
It is decent. K-Star Road near COEX has 17 GangnamDol statues of major groups, and the COEX area holds SMTOWN's complex, the K-Pop Square LED screen, and fan expos. For deeper K-pop content, though, many fans also head to Hongdae and specific agency areas.
Is Gangnam expensive?
Generally yes. It is Seoul's priciest district for dining, coffee, and shopping, and rents show it. You can still eat cheaply in the alleys behind Gangnam Station, but headline restaurants, dessert cafes, and boutiques run well above the city average.
Can I do a temple stay at Bongeunsa?
Yes. Bongeunsa, directly across from COEX, offers Temple Stay programs including meditation, temple food, and an overnight in the quarters. Day visitors are welcome too and entry to walk the grounds is free. It is a striking contrast to the surrounding skyscrapers.
