Is downtown Rio safe?

On weekdays during business hours, the main tourist axis is fine with normal precautions. Evenings and especially Sundays are the problem — streets empty out fast and empty streets in Centro are where phone snatching happens. Do Centro Monday to Friday, daytime.

Is Centro Rio worth visiting?

Yes — it's the only place to see Rio's 450 years of history: colonial monasteries, belle-époque theaters, and the modern Museum of Tomorrow on the old port. It's a completely different city from the beach zone, and that contrast is the point.

Metro Line 1 to Carioca or Cinelândia — about 20-25 minutes from Copacabana, R$7.90. Avoid driving; parking is scarce and traffic is grim. From the airport (Santos Dumont), the VLT drops you right into Centro.

Is the Museum of Tomorrow worth it?

The building itself (by Santiago Calatrava) is the star, and the waterfront plaza around it is free and great for a stroll. The exhibits are science-communication style — engaging but light; go for the architecture and the revitalized Boulevard Olímpico with its huge Kobra mural.

How does the VLT tram work?

It's a modern light rail looping through Centro and the port to Santos Dumont airport, running daily roughly 5:00-23:00. A ride costs R$5.00 — tap a contactless bank card or Riocard at the platform validators; there are no turnstiles but inspectors do check.

What is Confeitaria Colombo and is it open?

A belle-époque café from 1894 with giant Belgian mirrors — touristy, yes, but genuinely gorgeous and the pastéis de nata hold up. The Centro flagship on Rua Gonçalves Dias is open Monday-Friday 9:00-19:00 and Saturday 9:00-17:00, closed Sundays.
