Frequently asked questions

How much are tickets and hours?
The Floating Garden Observatory costs 2,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children aged 4 to 12. It's open 9:30am to 10:30pm with last admission at 10:00pm, so night views are easy.
Is it good in bad weather?
Less so, since the appeal is the open-air deck and the view. On rainy or very hazy days the experience drops off, so save it for a clear evening if you can.
Is the observatory outdoors?
The top ring is open-air, so you feel the wind and see the city unobstructed, with an enclosed floor just below. Dress warmly in winter and be aware it can close portions in bad weather.
What makes Umeda Sky Building special?
It's the architecture. Two 40-story towers are connected at the top by a doughnut-shaped rooftop observatory you reach via a glass escalator suspended between them. The open-air deck sets it apart from Osaka's enclosed observatories.
When is the best time to go up?
Sunset into blue hour is unbeatable, the sky colors behind the deck and the city lights come on. Arrive 30 to 40 minutes before sunset to get your spot on the rail.
Is there anything else in the building?
Yes, the basement holds Takimi-koji, a recreated retro Showa-era food alley with cheap eats and old-Osaka atmosphere. It's a fun spot to eat before or after the observatory.
Is it worth it over Abeno Harukas?
Harukas is far taller and easier to reach. Umeda wins on atmosphere, the open rooftop, the glowing floor, and the bold architecture make it more romantic. For sunset and photos, many prefer Umeda.
How do I get there?
It's northwest of Osaka/Umeda Station, about a nine-minute walk that includes an underground passage beneath the rail tracks. Follow the signs carefully, the route is slightly confusing on a first visit.
