Directions

Tennoji-Abeno is south Osaka's anchor: Abeno Harukas (Japan's tallest-tier skyscraper with the Harukas 300 observatory, 2,000 yen), Tennoji Zoo (a bargain 500 yen), Shitennoji — one of Japan's oldest temples — and a big park. Great half-day with kids or as a base; it's a transit-hub district, more useful than charming between the sights.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine Tennoji with Shinsekai?
That's the classic pairing: temple and zoo or park by day, then walk 10 minutes northwest through Tennoji Park to Shinsekai for kushikatsu and Tsutenkaku neon in the evening.
What is there to do in Tennoji and Abeno?
The big four: Harukas 300 observatory atop Abeno Harukas, Tennoji Zoo, Shitennoji Temple (founded 593, one of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples), and Tennoji Park with its lawn and cafes. Shinsekai is a 10-minute walk if you want kushikatsu after.
How do I get to Tennoji?
It's one of Osaka's biggest hubs: the JR Loop and Yamatoji lines, Midosuji and Tanimachi subway lines all stop at Tennoji, and Kintetsu's Osaka Abenobashi Station is across the street. From Namba it's about 5 minutes on the Midosuji Line; the Yamatoji Line runs direct to Nara.
How much is the Harukas 300 observatory?
2,000 yen for adults (1,200 yen ages 12-17, 700 yen ages 6-11), open 9:00-22:00 with last entry 21:30. Floors 58-60 give a 360-degree view over all of Osaka — on clear days out to Awaji Island and Kyoto.
Is Tennoji a good area to stay in?
Yes for practicality — direct trains to Kansai Airport, Nara, Kyoto (with one change), and Namba in minutes, plus department stores and cheaper hotels than Umeda. It's quieter at night than Namba; balance convenience against nightlife.
Is Tennoji Zoo worth it?
At 500 yen for adults (200 yen for kids, preschoolers free), absolutely — it's a pleasant, century-old city zoo, open 9:30-17:00, closed Mondays. Manage expectations: it's charming and cheap, not a world-class safari park.
What is Shitennoji Temple?
Founded by Prince Shotoku in 593, it's considered Japan's first state Buddhist temple. The outer grounds are free; the inner precinct and treasure house charge small admissions (a few hundred yen each). On the 21st-22nd of each month a big flea market fills the grounds.
Harukas 300 or Umeda Sky Building — which view is better?
Harukas is higher (300 m vs 173 m) and fully indoors with a cafe; Umeda Sky's open-air rooftop ring is more atmospheric. Both cost about 2,000 yen. If you're staying south or doing Shinsekai, pick Harukas; if you're based in Kita, pick Umeda.
