Bandra West is the Queen of the Suburbs: seafront promenades at Bandstand and Carter Road, centuries-old churches, celebrity homes, street shopping on Linking Road and Mumbai's best cafe-and-bar culture. Equal parts fishing village, hipster hangout and old money. If you visit one suburb, make it this one.

Dadar is the beating heart of Mumbai and its Marathi cultural core: the dawn flower market, Shivaji Park's cricket legends, bustling shopping streets and one of India's busiest rail interchanges. Loud, crowded, unpretentious and deeply local. Go early, go hungry, and don't expect polish.

Fort is South Mumbai's colonial-era core: CSMT (a UNESCO site), Flora Fountain, the Bombay High Court, Mumbai University's Gothic buildings and heritage cafes. A walker's dream of grand architecture. Many buildings are working offices and courts, so admire from outside and time visits for weekday business hours.

Kala Ghoda is South Mumbai's crescent-shaped arts precinct, packed into a few walkable blocks: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj museum, Jehangir Art Gallery, David Sassoon Library, boutiques and cafes amid colonial architecture. Every February it hosts India's biggest street arts festival (31 Jan-8 Feb 2026, free).

Andheri West is Mumbai's suburban engine room: Bollywood offices, Lokhandwala shopping, Versova beach and a dense restaurant-and-bar scene. Not a sightseeing postcard, but where real Mumbai lives, works and eats. Superb transit connects it to the airport (8 km) and the rest of the western suburbs.

Colaba is South Mumbai's tourist heart: the Gateway of India, the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, Colaba Causeway's shopping-and-cafe strip and heritage cafes like Leopold's and Mondegar. Iconic and walkable, but touristy and crowded. Come for the landmarks and street bargaining, then explore quieter Fort and Kala Ghoda nearby.

Juhu is Mumbai's famous beach suburb: a six-kilometre stretch of Arabian Sea sunset, legendary street food stalls, celebrity bungalows and weekend crowds. Come for pav bhaji, bhel puri and golden-hour views, not for swimming (strong undercurrents). Transit is weaker here, so plan your ride.

Lower Parel is Mumbai's reinvented mill district: old cotton mills turned into Phoenix Palladium's luxury malls, Kamala Mills' restaurants and clubs, corporate towers and the city's buzziest nightlife. Slick and pricey rather than historic. Come to shop, dine and party; excellent transit now serves it.
