Directions

Monaco-Ville — Le Rocher, the Rock — is the medieval old town on the headland: the Prince's Palace, the cathedral where Grace Kelly rests, and the superb Oceanographic Museum. It's the one district every friend sends you to. Caveat: by 11am it's wall-to-wall day-trippers; come early or stay past 6pm when it empties beautifully.

Frequently asked questions

Is Monaco-Ville too touristy?
The main lanes between palace and museum are souvenir-shop central by day, no sugarcoating it. But the Saint-Martin Gardens along the cliff are free and calm, and after the day-trippers leave around 5-6pm the Rock becomes magical.
Can I do Monaco-Ville and the casino in one day?
Easily. Do the Rock in the morning (guard change at 11:55am), lunch in La Condamine, then walk 20 minutes or bus to Monte-Carlo for the casino's gaming rooms, which open to visitors at 2pm. Monaco is tiny — a determined day covers it.
How much is the Prince's Palace to visit?
The State Apartments cost 13 euros for adults, 8 euros for kids 6-17, open roughly late March to mid-October, 10am-6pm (to 7pm in July-August). Tickets are sold at the counters on Place du Palais — online booking wasn't available last we checked. It closes around the Grand Prix in early June.
When is the changing of the guard in Monaco?
Daily at 11:55am sharp on Place du Palais, and it's free. Arrive by 11:30 for a decent viewing spot — the square gets thick with tour groups. The whole ceremony takes about 10 minutes.
Where is Grace Kelly buried?
In Monaco Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame-Immaculée), right in Monaco-Ville, alongside Prince Rainier III. Entry is free — just dress respectfully and expect a steady stream of visitors filing past the Grimaldi tombs.
Are there places to eat in Monaco-Ville?
A handful of touristy but pleasant terraces on the old-town squares, plus spots serving barbagiuans and socca. For better value, eat down in La Condamine before or after — it's a 10-minute walk.
Is the Oceanographic Museum worth 22.50 euros?
Yes — it's one of Europe's great aquarium-museums, dramatic cliff-edge building included, with kids 4-17 at 14 euros. Open daily from 10am (9:30am in summer, closing up to 8pm), shut only Christmas Day and Grand Prix weekend. Budget two hours minimum.
How do I get up to the Rock?
On foot up the Rampe Majeure from Place d'Armes (10-15 scenic minutes), or buses 1 and 2 to Place de la Visitation. Note that private cars with foreign plates can't drive into the old town — walk or bus, honestly walking is nicer.
