Why is the pavement wavy at Senado Square?

It's calçada portuguesa — hand-laid Portuguese mosaic in a wave pattern, installed by craftsmen in the 1990s to echo Lisbon's squares. The waves nod to Macau's seafaring identity, and they're best photographed early morning without a thousand feet on them.
