A friend sends you here for the most photogenic, least polished slice of old Macau; some blocks are visibly run-down, which is part of the point.

- Yes — Macau overall is very safe, and this is a lived-in neighbourhood, not a rough one. It's just visibly older and scruffier than the tourist core, with some shuttered buildings; normal city awareness is plenty.

- Easiest is to walk 10-15 minutes downhill from Senado Square through the old streets, or take almost any bus running along the waterfront roads. From Taipa, the LRT to Barra puts you at the harbour's southern end.

- The old ferry piers here are mostly retired — passenger ferries to Hong Kong and Shenzhen now leave from the Outer Harbour and Taipa terminals. The harbour itself is for fishing boats and atmosphere these days.
