Soweto is South Africa's most storied township — Vilakazi Street (the only street with two Nobel laureates' homes), the Hector Pieterson Museum, Orlando Towers, and a food and shebeen scene that's pure Joburg. Fordsburg is Joburg's historic Indian and Pakistani quarter — the city's best cheap eats, hands down. Come hungry for biryani, chaat, kebabs and falooda, browse the Oriental Plaza's dozens of fabric and spice shops, and hit the weekend night-market buzz around Fordsburg Square. It's scruffy and chaotic; that's exactly why locals love it.

Melville is Joburg's bohemian village — 7th Street's bars, bistros and bookshops, the 27 Boxes container market, and the wild Melville Koppies nature reserve up the hill. It's walkable by Joburg standards, full of actual locals, and the best all-round night out that isn't a mall. Weeknights can be sleepy; weekends deliver.

Parkhurst is a leafy village-style suburb whose 4th Avenue is one of Joburg's busiest dining strips — pavement bistros, décor and antique shops, and a genuinely walkable, safe-feeling few blocks. It's polished and pricier than Melville, more local than Sandton. Book ahead for dinner; weekend tables vanish fast.

Maboneng is the inner-city precinct that put downtown Joburg back on the map — galleries, studios and the Sunday Market on Main at Arts on Main (10:00-15:00). It's smaller and patchier than its 2015 heyday, with some blocks visibly struggling, but Sundays still genuinely buzz. Come on a Sunday, stay inside the precinct, and Uber in and out.

Sandton is Joburg's gleaming business district — 'Africa's richest square mile' — built around Sandton City mall and Nelson Mandela Square, with the Gautrain from the airport landing right underneath it. Safe, convenient, and excellent for shopping and business dinners, but honestly short on soul; treat it as a base, not a destination.
