Pilsen is Chicago's Mexican-American cultural heart on the Lower West Side, famous for hundreds of murals along 16th and 18th Streets, the free National Museum of Mexican Art, and standout taquerias. Girl & the Goat, Monteverde, and Rose Mary draw reservations weeks out. Trendy and pricey rather than homey. Morgan station on the Green and Pink lines drops you in the middle.

The Magnificent Mile is the stretch of North Michigan Avenue lined with flagship stores, hotels, and landmarks like the historic Water Tower. It is Chicago's premier shopping and strolling boulevard, dressed with lights around the holidays. It is crowded and pricey, and much of it is chain retail, so treat it as a walk more than a shopping mission.
