How do I get around the Hotel Zone cheaply?

The R-1 and R-2 buses run the entire boulevard 24 hours a day for a flat 12 pesos — pay the driver in exact change, in pesos. They come every few minutes and stop constantly. Taxis work but quote tourist rates; always agree on the fare before getting in, as meters aren't used.

Do I need pesos in the Hotel Zone or are dollars fine?

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere here, but at store-set exchange rates that quietly cost you 10-15%. Pay in pesos by card or cash and you come out ahead. The one place you absolutely need peso coins and small bills is the bus.

Is the water rough in the Hotel Zone?

Depends on which side of the '7' you're on. The north-facing arm (Km 1-9, e.g. Playa Tortugas, Playa Caracol) is sheltered and calm; the east-facing stretch (Km 9-20, including Playa Delfines) takes open Caribbean waves with real currents. Swim near flags and take red-flag days seriously — people misjudge this coast every year.

How far is the Hotel Zone from the airport?

About 20-35 minutes to most of the strip. ADO buses run from the airport to downtown (not into the Hotel Zone), so most visitors pre-book a shared or private transfer — roughly $20-60 USD depending on type — or take an authorized airport taxi at fixed zone rates. Rideshare pickup at the airport remains restricted, so don't count on it.

Is the Hotel Zone walkable?

Within a node — around Punta Cancún, or Kukulcán Plaza, or your resort's stretch — yes, there are sidewalks the whole way. End to end, no: it's over 20 km of sun-blasted boulevard. Everyone, including locals working there, hops the 12-peso bus for anything beyond a kilometer or two.

When is sargassum season in Cancun?

Roughly May through September, peaking in early summer, though it varies a lot year to year and even beach to beach — the north-facing arm usually fares better than the east-facing stretch. December through April is generally clean. Check a recent sargassum map or webcam before a summer trip if the beach is your whole plan.

Are Cancun Hotel Zone beaches public?
