Frequently asked questions

Is Museum Island celebrating any anniversary in 2025–2026?
Yes. Museum Island is marking its 200th anniversary with a multi-year programme of special exhibitions and events across all five museums. In 2026, the spotlight is on the Alte Nationalgalerie, which marks its own 150th anniversary. The celebrations culminate with the Pergamon Museum's reopening on 4 June 2027.
How do I get to Museum Island by public transport?
The easiest option is the U5 U-Bahn to Museumsinsel station, just a 3-minute walk away. Alternatively, take S-Bahn lines S3/S5/S7/S9 to Hackescher Markt (about 10 minutes on foot), or Tram M1/12 to Am Kupfergraben, which stops right alongside the island.
How much does it cost to visit Museum Island Berlin?
The Museumsinsel-Ticket costs €24 and grants admission to all open museums on the island for one day. Individual museum day tickets are also available. Children under 18 enter free of charge.
Should I book Museum Island tickets in advance?
Yes — the official Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (smb.museum) strongly recommends booking online up to four weeks ahead to skip queues. For major special exhibitions, timed-entry slots may be required and can sell out, especially on weekends.
Is the Pergamon Museum open right now?
No. The Pergamonmuseum has been fully closed to visitors since October 23, 2023 for comprehensive renovation. Its North Wing — including the Pergamon Altar — is scheduled to reopen on 4 June 2027. The South Wing (Ishtar Gate, etc.) is not expected to reopen until around 2037.
Where is the bust of Nefertiti?
The world-famous 3,000-year-old bust of Egyptian Queen Nefertiti is displayed in the Neues Museum, in the North Dome Hall on the upper floor. It is one of the most visited objects on the entire island.
Which museums are currently open on Museum Island?
As of 2026, four museums are open Tuesday–Sunday: the Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, and Bode-Museum. The Pergamonmuseum is closed for renovation until June 2027. The James-Simon-Galerie visitor centre remains open and is the recommended starting point.
What days are the museums on Museum Island closed?
All museums are closed every Monday. They are also closed on 24 and 31 December. On most public holidays, museums follow their Sunday schedule (10:00–18:00); always verify on smb.museum before visiting.
