Ari is the leafy, low-key neighborhood locals send you to when you're templed out: specialty coffee, indie bakeries, khao soi joints, and quiet sois of mid-century houses, all within a 15-minute walk of BTS Ari. It's a half-day of eating and wandering, not sightseeing — come hungry, skip it if you need big-ticket attractions.

Yaowarat is Bangkok's 200-year-old Chinatown and its greatest street-food theater: after dark the main road becomes a neon-lit crush of woks, seafood grills, and Michelin-listed stalls. The MRT drops you right into it at Wat Mangkon station. One honest warning — many vendors rest on Mondays, so don't make it your first Chinatown night.

Charoenkrung — Bangkok's oldest paved road, running through Bang Rak to the river — is the city's Creative District: century-old shophouses, galleries like Warehouse 30, the TCDC design center in the old General Post Office, legit Michelin-listed street food, and riverside bars. It rewards slow walkers; distances are longer and sweatier than they look on the map.

Talat Noi is the old Chinese-Portuguese quarter squeezed between Chinatown and the river — rusting auto-parts shophouses, shrine alleys, street art around Trok San Chao Rong Kueak, and some of Bangkok's most atmospheric cafes (Mother Roaster, the 200-year-old warehouse at 965bkk). It's free to wander and best on foot; go for golden hour, not midday heat.

Ekkamai (Sukhumvit Soi 63) is Thonglor's younger, scruffier sibling: indie music venues, craft-beer bars, unmarked-door clubs, and good cheap-to-mid restaurants, favored by Thai students and creatives over expat money. Come at night — daytime Ekkamai is mostly a long traffic-clogged soi, and the good spots are scattered, so budget for motorbike-taxi hops.

Rattanakosin is Bangkok's royal old town — the Grand Palace (500 baht, ticket sales 8:30am-3:30pm), Wat Pho's Reclining Buddha (300 baht), and Wat Arun across the river (200 baht) all sit within one walkable circuit. It's unmissable and it knows it: brutal heat, strict dress codes, and tour-bus crowds. Go at opening, and ignore anyone saying a temple is 'closed'.

Thonglor (Sukhumvit Soi 55) is where moneyed Bangkok eats and drinks: world-class cocktail bars, chef-driven restaurants, and sleek community malls along a two-kilometer soi. It's the city's most polished night out — and priced accordingly, with venues scattered far from the BTS. Come for a splurge dinner and bar crawl, not for culture or bargains.

Banglamphu is old riverside Bangkok with the world's most famous backpacker strip — Khao San Road — stitched into it. Khao San itself is loud, boozy, and built for tourists; the surrounding sois (Rambuttri, Phra Athit) are calmer and genuinely charming. No rail line reaches it, so you'll arrive by river boat or taxi.
