This small but exceptional museum is free always — no asterisks — and houses a superb collection of 19th and early 20th century figurative painting alongside ambitious contemporary exhibitions. The permanent collection of German and American Salon paintings is genuinely rare in the Pacific Northwest, and the rotating shows punch well above the museum's size. It's a neighborhood gem that even many longtime Seattleites haven't discovered. Caveat: the building is modest and easy to walk past; look for the understated entrance on Terry Avenue.
