Perched atop Mount Hamilton at 4,200 feet, this working research observatory operated by UC Santa Cruz has been observing the cosmos since 1888 and houses the world's second-largest refracting telescope. Daytime self-guided tours let you walk through the historic dome and learn about ongoing astronomical research. The summer evening programs with telescope viewing are exceptional and sell out fast. Caveat: the 19-mile winding mountain road is not suitable for large vehicles or those prone to motion sickness, and weather can close the road.
