Frequently asked questions
- Can I visit the Trevi Fountain for free?
- Yes — in two ways. The piazza-level view is always free, 24/7. Additionally, from 10 PM to 9 AM every day the ticket office closes and the basin area is accessible without charge, though it can still be busy until well past midnight.
- How do I get to the Trevi Fountain by public transport?
- Take Metro Line A to Barberini–Fontana di Trevi station, then walk roughly 5–8 minutes south along Via del Tritone and turn onto Via dei Poli. Multiple bus lines (52, 53, 62, 63, 71, 83, 85, and others) also stop on Via del Tritone, about 200 m from the fountain.
- Who is exempt from the €2 entry fee?
- Rome and Metropolitan City residents (with ID), children up to 5 years old, people with disabilities and their carers, and licensed tour guides are all admitted free. All other tourists and non-residents must pay.
- Do I need a ticket to see the Trevi Fountain?
- Since 2 February 2026, a €2 ticket is required to enter the inner basin area (the part closest to the monument) daily from 9 AM to 10 PM. Viewing the fountain from the surrounding piazza remains completely free at any hour.
- What are the Trevi Fountain's opening hours?
- The ticketed basin area is open 9 AM–10 PM most days (last entry 9 PM). On Mondays and Fridays, when coins are collected and cleaning takes place, opening is delayed — typically to around 11:30 AM or later. Always check fontanaditrevi.roma.it for the current day's schedule, as hours can vary.
- How many people are allowed near the fountain at once?
- Authorities cap the number of visitors in the basin area at 400 at any one time. Even with a valid ticket you may need to queue briefly during peak hours. Visitors enter via the central staircase and exit on the Via dei Crociferi side.
- What happens to the coins thrown into the Trevi Fountain?
- City workers collect the coins on Mondays and Fridays (which is why the fountain opens later those days). The proceeds — amounting to thousands of euros per week — are donated to Caritas, the Catholic charity that assists Romans in need.
- Where and how do I buy a Trevi Fountain ticket?
- Tickets can be purchased in advance online at fontanaditrevi.roma.it, at Civic Museums ticket offices, Tourist Infopoints, and affiliated sales points. On-site purchase is available at the ticket booth on Via della Stamperia by card only — no cash accepted.
