Augustus's Altar of Peace, one of the finest surviving monuments of ancient Rome, housed in a controversial modernist pavilion by Richard Meier that itself sparked fierce debate. The altar's carved marble reliefs depicting the imperial family in procession are extraordinarily detailed and well-preserved. The museum context and multimedia displays make it highly accessible. The Meier building divides Romans but is architecturally significant.
