The Colosseum (Colosseo) is Rome's iconic 1st-century AD Flavian amphitheatre — the largest ever built in antiquity — where gladiatorial contests and public spectacles once drew up to 80,000 spectators. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most-visited paid monument in the world, it anchors Rome's ancient core alongside the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Colosseum's opening hours?
The Colosseum opens daily at 08:30 year-round. Closing time is seasonal: 19:15 from 29 March to 30 September, 18:30 from 1–24 October, and 16:30 from 25 October to 28 February. Last admission is always one hour before closing. The site is closed only on 25 December and 1 January.
How long does a Colosseum visit take?
Allow 2–3 hours for the Colosseum itself (upper tiers, museum, and any included upgrade). If you plan to continue to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill — both included in the same ticket — budget a full half-day of 4–5 hours total. The Roman Forum–Palatine area opens at 09:00, thirty minutes after the Colosseum.
How do I get to the Colosseum by public transport?
The fastest option is Metro Line B to Colosseo station — the exit opens directly onto Piazza del Colosseo, roughly a 1-minute walk to the entrance. Metro Line C (Colosseo-Fori Imperiali, opened December 2025) also serves the site. Multiple ATAC bus lines (75, 85, 87, 117, 118) stop at Piazza del Colosseo. Avoid driving: the area is inside Rome's ZTL restricted-traffic zone.
How much does a Colosseum ticket cost in 2026?
The standard 24-hour ticket costs €18 for adults (25+) and includes one entry to the Colosseum plus one entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. EU citizens aged 18–24 pay €2; visitors under 18 enter free but must still reserve a free timed ticket. A Full Experience ticket (Arena Floor + Underground) costs €24. Book at ticketing.colosseo.it — the only official channel.
Is there free entry to the Colosseum?
Yes. Admission is free on the first Sunday of every month and on selected Italian national holidays (25 April, 2 June, 4 November). On free days, tickets must be collected in person at the on-site box office — no online booking is available — and queues can be extreme. Note that Arena Floor and Underground access is not available on free-entry days.
Can I visit the Colosseum underground or arena floor?
Yes, but these areas require the Full Experience ticket (€24) or a dedicated guided tour, and slots are strictly limited — they sell out quickly when the 30-day booking window opens. The Underground (Hypogeum) tour is guided and timed; the Arena Floor gives a gladiator's-eye view of the reconstructed wooden platform at the centre of the amphitheatre.
What is included in a standard Colosseum ticket?
A standard 24-hour ticket grants access to the Colosseum's first and second tiers plus the museum, and one entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill within 24 hours before or after your Colosseum slot. The Arena Floor, Underground (Hypogeum), and Attic are separate upgrades requiring the Full Experience ticket (€24) or a guided add-on.
Do I need to book Colosseum tickets in advance?
Yes — timed entry is compulsory and tickets go on sale exactly 30 days before your visit date at ticketing.colosseo.it. Arena Floor and Underground slots sell out within hours of release during peak season. A small on-site ticket office reopened in 2023 for same-day sales, but availability is very limited; advance booking is strongly recommended.
