The Altare della Patria, or Vittoriano, is the vast white marble monument to King Victor Emmanuel II that dominates Piazza Venezia and holds Italy's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Romans nickname it the wedding cake or typewriter for its bombastic scale, but the terraces give great free views over the city and a paid glass elevator climbs to a full rooftop panorama. There is little historic depth inside, so treat it mainly as a monument and viewpoint.
