Still worth doing properly: the official Statue City Cruises ferry ($25.50 adults) from Battery Park includes Liberty Island, the excellent museum, and Ellis Island. Crown access adds just $0.30 but sells out months ahead — only 500 tickets daily. Caveat: it's a half-day commitment with airport-style security; the free Staten Island Ferry is the drive-by alternative.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get crown tickets for the Statue of Liberty?
Book 'Crown Reserve' on Statue City Cruises' site as early as possible — only 500 sell per day, max four per household, and peak season sells out 3-4 months out. You must collect wristbands in person at Castle Clinton before boarding.
Is Ellis Island included with the Statue of Liberty ticket?
Yes — the same ferry loops to Ellis Island, and the immigration museum there is outstanding, arguably better than Liberty Island itself. Don't skip it just because you're tired.
Is the crown climb hard?
It's 162 narrow, spiral steps from the pedestal with no elevator, tight quarters, and it gets hot in summer. Doable if you're reasonably fit, but skip it if you're claustrophobic — the pedestal views are honestly excellent.
Where does the Statue of Liberty ferry leave from?
In Manhattan, from Castle Clinton in Battery Park (there's also a New Jersey departure from Liberty State Park, which usually has shorter lines). Take the 1 to South Ferry, R/W to Whitehall, or 4/5 to Bowling Green.
How long does the whole Statue of Liberty trip take?
Budget 4-5 hours for both islands including security and ferry waits, or about 3 hours for Liberty Island alone. Take the first morning ferry — by late morning the security line at Battery Park can eat an hour by itself.
What can I bring to the Statue of Liberty?
Small bags are fine for the island, but pedestal and crown access have strict rules — lockers are required for most items, and the crown climb allows almost nothing but a camera and medication. Security is airport-style.
How much does it cost to visit the Statue of Liberty?
The official ferry is $25.50 for adults, $22.50 for seniors 62+, $16.50 for kids 4-12, free under 4 — and that includes Liberty Island, the Statue of Liberty Museum, and Ellis Island. Crown access adds just $0.30 but requires booking months ahead.
Can I see the Statue of Liberty for free?
Sort of — the Staten Island Ferry is free, runs 24/7, and passes within decent photo distance. You won't land on the island, but if you just want the view, it's the best free boat ride in America.
