The National Coach Museum holds one of the world's most spectacular collections of royal carriages, spanning the 17th to 19th centuries, displayed across two buildings including a striking modern pavilion by Paulo Mendes da Rocha. The Baroque coaches commissioned by the Portuguese ambassador to Pope Clement XI are among the most ornate objects you will ever see. It draws large crowds but moves efficiently and the sheer visual spectacle justifies the visit. Caveat: the modern building divides opinion architecturally and the older riding arena building is the more atmospheric of the two.
