The Convento do Carmo is a ruined Gothic church whose roof collapsed in the 1755 earthquake and was never rebuilt, leaving dramatic open-air arches against the sky above Chiado. The surviving nave houses a small archaeological museum with tombs, ceramics and even a couple of mummies. It's an atmospheric, moody spot and pairs naturally with a ride up the adjacent Santa Justa Lift.
