Modderfontein Reserve is a surprisingly expansive and tranquil nature reserve on the east side of Johannesburg, set on the historic grounds of the old AECI explosives factory. The landscape is dramatic — rolling hills, dams, and grasslands with excellent birding and trail running. It's a genuine escape from the city with a strong local following among trail runners and hikers. Caveat: it's a bit of a drive from central Joburg and the entrance fee and hours should be confirmed before visiting.
