Klipriviersberg is a large and underrated nature reserve in the south of Johannesburg, protecting a significant stretch of Highveld grassland and rocky ridges with excellent hiking trails and prolific birdlife. It's one of the best places in the city to experience genuine Highveld ecology, including zebra and various antelope. The trails are well-marked and the reserve feels genuinely wild. Caveat: it's located in the less-visited south of Joburg and requires a car to reach comfortably.
