Is Back Bay safe at night?

Yes, it's one of the safer central neighborhoods, well-lit and busy into the evening around Newbury and Boylston. Standard city awareness applies, especially in quieter alleys and around the station late.

Is Newbury Street worth it?

For strolling and people-watching, absolutely. Eight blocks of shops, cafes, and brownstone storefronts. It leans expensive and touristy toward Arlington, but the Mass Ave end has more character and independent spots.

Is Back Bay Station really under construction?

Yes. A multi-phase MBTA renovation began January 2026, rebuilding the interior, fare gates, lighting, and exterior entrances. The first phase runs into late June, then work shifts to the Dartmouth Street side. Trains still run normally, but expect detours.

Copley on the Green Line drops you at Copley Square and the library. Back Bay station on the Orange Line (also Commuter Rail and Amtrak) is a block south. Arlington and Hynes are both a short walk too.
