Frequently asked questions

Is it cash only?
Effectively yes; bring plenty of small euro notes and coins because most stalls do not take cards. There are ATMs in the surrounding streets if you run short. Cash also helps with end-of-day bargaining.
Is it crowded?
It gets busy, especially Friday afternoons, with narrow aisles along the canal. Mornings are noticeably calmer. If you dislike jostling, go early on a Tuesday.
What days is the market on?
Only Tuesdays and Fridays, from 11am to about 6:30pm. It is closed every other day, so plan around those two. Many stalls start packing up around 6pm.
Can I find non-food items?
Yes, alongside food there are stalls selling fabric, textiles, household goods and cheap clothing. It is a real everyday market, not just groceries. Bring cash for those too.
What should I buy or eat?
Load up on cheap fresh produce, olives, cheese, dried fruit and spices, and eat a hot gozleme (stuffed flatbread) from a street stall. Prices are excellent by Berlin standards. Bring a bag for whatever you can't resist.
Is it actually Turkish?
It grew from Neukoelln's large Turkish community and still has a strong Turkish and Middle Eastern character, though vendors and shoppers now reflect the whole neighborhood's diversity. That mix is part of its appeal. It is a genuine local market, not a staged one.
When is the best time to go?
Late morning, right at 11am, gets you the freshest produce, the calmest aisles and the nicest light. Late afternoon is more crowded and hectic but you can find markdowns as vendors clear stock. Avoid the very end if you want full selection.
Is it good for a picnic?
Perfect for it. Grab bread, cheese, olives, fruit and a gozleme, then sit along the Landwehr Canal right beside the market. It is one of the cheapest, nicest lunches in Berlin. Weather permitting, this is the move.
