Berlin's great old masters painting collection is criminally undervisited, housing one of Europe's finest assemblies of European paintings from the 13th to 18th centuries — Vermeer, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Botticelli, and Raphael all represented at the highest level. The vast, calm galleries rarely feel crowded, making it a genuine connoisseur's pleasure. The building is functional rather than beautiful, but the art more than compensates. A half-day here rewards serious attention.
