The Alte Nationalgalerie houses one of Germany's finest collections of 19th-century painting and sculpture, from German Romanticism — including Caspar David Friedrich's haunting landscapes — to French Impressionism. The neoclassical temple building is itself a landmark. It tends to be less mobbed than the Pergamon or Neues Museum, making it a more contemplative experience. Thursday evenings offer extended hours and a quieter atmosphere.
