Frequently asked questions

How do I get there?
It's very central, right behind Museumplein and near Leidseplein, walkable from both. Trams 1, 2, 3, 5, and 12 stop around its edges. From Amsterdam Centraal, tram 2 or 12 reaches the park in about 15 minutes.
Is it good for kids?
Very, there are playgrounds (the Groot Melkhuis cafe has a lovely one), wide-open grass, ponds with birds, and space to run and cycle. It's a favourite with local families and an easy break from grown-up sightseeing.
Can I drink alcohol or barbecue in the park?
A relaxed drink on the grass is common and tolerated, but glass and rowdy behaviour aren't appreciated, and barbecuing is restricted to designated areas or not permitted, rules tightened after litter problems. Check current signage and take your rubbish with you.
Is it free and always open?
Completely free and open 24 hours a day, it's a public park with no gates or tickets. Cafes, the theatre, and events have their own schedules, but wandering, picnicking, and cycling through cost nothing anytime.
Can I cycle through the park?
Yes, cycling is allowed and popular on the paths, and it's a lovely shortcut across the west side of the city. Mind pedestrians, dogs, and rollerbladers, especially on busy sunny days when the park gets packed.
What's there to do besides walk?
Plenty, picnic on the lawns, catch a free open-air theatre show in summer, visit the rose garden, grab a drink at the Blauwe Theehuis or Groot Melkhuis (great for kids with its playground), or just people-watch. It's a social hub as much as a park.
Is Vondelpark worth visiting?
Yes, it's where you'll see everyday Amsterdam life, joggers, families, students, musicians, rather than tour buses. On a sunny day it's genuinely delightful and it's free. Even a 20-minute stroll between museums is worth it.
Is it safe at night?
It's generally fine and well-used into the evening, especially in summer. As with any city park after dark, stay on lit main paths and use common sense; the quieter far ends are best avoided alone late at night.
